New changes for Pit fire Workshop
Extension for Workshop #1
I have decided to combine Workshop #1 with the adventurous Pit fire experience of the previous Workshop #2 with an extra day at the beach which will be scheduled in late September. You will have time to create an additional small mask using your image from the mold taken while participating in Workshop #1. It can be hand painted with clay slips or burnished for the pit fire which will take place on a Saturday in September. Date to be announced as it depends on the weather. Participants from all summer workshops are invited to attend.
This is an exciting extension of the workshop with surprises galore, especially when pit firing. Its a grand day at the beach, great conversation with exceptional people, good food and excitement around the pit when your pieces are pulled from the ashes. This will be a creative, working one day retreat, especially at the beach. . .We have to dig the pit!
Potluck
I will provide drinks, utensils, plates, Organic salad, something sweet.
Additional Fee: $20.00
(to be paid that day if you are attending)
includes firing of piece (which has to be fired at a different temperature than the first mask, wood, sawdust
but the cow dung is free!
Parking at Dillion Beach is $7.00, however, Carpooling can save on parking and gas! We can meet at the studio and go from there.
So you are actually getting to experience two workshops for the price of one!!!!!

Creative Aunt, Grandmother, granddaughter, two friends and a young spirited woman shared the weekend with me!
The first step. . .taking the impression of your image. And yes, the nose holes are left open and you can breathe! This process only takes about 12 to 15 minutes. It is like having a facial!

Next, the filling of the mold. You get your hands in clay as you hold your image securely letting your hands press the clay into the negative.
The masks are pulled from the mold and the work begins. Cleaning, detailing, creating upon.
Yes, you get to look at yourself all weekend! It is amazing what you will see.

Testimony
" This workshop was fantastic on so many levels. As a 64 year old woman, I know the experience of aging, and this workshop and the opportunity to confront and accept my image, in real time, felt like a "Right of Passage". I do feel like I have been through the fire and have arrived fully present, in one strong piece, on the other side. I have come face to face with myself as I never have before. What a gift.
As an artist, I am totally inspired. I say "am" because what I got from this workshop is still spinning in my head. It was a much needed press to be outside of my comfort zone and I feel renewed and recharged with vision. Another great gift. I felt totally taken care of, in every way. All my needs were met with grace and love. It really was an amazing weekend and Rebecca is not only a gifted artist, but a very gifted teacher.
Rebecca, thank you so very much!"

Tamara was on a mission to tell a story. . .her personal story. My greatest joy was seeing her face light up each time I pulled the pieces from the mold. She so enjoyed this process, we all were inspired by her enthusiasm!

Patricia's discoveries about herself captivated the group as she ventures into creating beyond her mask.

Corrine brought such a sweetness to the group with that constant smile and warm, gentle nature. We were blessed.

Phyllis relaxes in between the creative madness to call home and check on those precious wolf hounds which can be seen in the patch work on her overalls.

" . . . I can honestly say this was an "aha" moment for me. I feel I can do anything and try anything. I may not be the next Da Vinci, but I sure have fun with it. At 61, my boundaries are expanded and I will use this experience to go beyond my comfort zone again. I would recommend Rebecca's workshop to anyone and everyone. You may discover some masks you didn't know you have and let go of other masks that are no longer serving you well. But above all, you will definitely enjoy yourself! "

Testimony
Rebecca is a gifted artist, passionate artists' midwife and patient teacher. Through her skillful and practiced hands, her very warm heart and encouragement, I was able to create what I consider a life changing fine art piece of my face. And that is only the beginning. Throughout the workshop - before, during and after each day - something wonderful and mysterious was working in me. I came to new realizations- a knowing that has healed me on many levels. I embraced my mother, my ancestral heritage, and myself, in a field of forgiveness, tenderness and exquisite love. The synergy of the group was electrifying and was facilitated by Rebecca's calm and penetrating questions about what is behind and beyond the mask . It is a once in a lifetime experience, not to be missed by anyone curious about themselves and the mystery of life. Well worth twice the price.

Cynthia's story keeps going. After taking it home she added many more pieces and made some more changes. Beautifully done!

"I'm still reaping the benefits of the workshop. I did add a few more items to my mask. You're right it continues to grow. Again I have to say your workshop was the best I have ever been to. And as an instructor, excellent. I came away with new ideas and most of all a good friend, you."

The mask makers!!!!!

At workshop's end, we linger, cry, hug and promise not to be out of touch. We have all gone "beyond" what we thought would happen.
I am always astonished at the openness of the groups. You are safe here in this ole barn and what is created here is more than a mask made of clay.
So, if you are curious, come join me and those who choose that same weekend with you for an adventure "beyond the masks!"
Pitfire. . . Extension day for Workshop#1
Pulling a piece from the pit
But first. . . . .pieces must be prepared.
Smooth stones are used to burnish the clay to give it a soft luster. It is fired at a lower temperature to keep that more sophisticated, polished look.
Off to the Dillion Beach for the Pit fire. Barbara gathers seaweed for the firing. The salt and the minerals make for amazing results.
Burnished and slip painted pieces await the pit.
After the pit is dug, a layer of saw dust covers the bottom and the pieces are placed in. Layer after layer goes on top of the pieces
(seaweed, oxides, cow dung, kindling, paper, wood )
Yes, I gather dung for your firing! Only the finest!
Preparing the Pit for the firing.
The fire is lit and the wait begins!
Toasts and blessings to the firing are made, lunch is served, walks on the beach are taken and great conversations enjoyed while we wait.
Combing the beach for accouterments to add to the mask is always invigorating!
Masks emerge from the ashes and are ready to take back to the studio for embellishing.
Lori begins the embellishing after applying a small amount of clear shoe wax to the mask to give it a more intense luster and bring the color out a bit.
One of my pieces from that Pit fire embellished with leather, silver buttons and handmade beads.
I know you will have an
weekend creating beautiful art.
Come join us for an extraordinary adventure in discovering you!
